A local team-up

We’ve joined forces to create a truly local, closed-loop system:

  • Zero-waste container: This canister is the first large-scale product made entirely from Icelandic plastic waste that never leaves the country. It is created by us, Pure North, right here at our recycling factory in Hveragerði.
  • Local sourcing: We don't just turn waste into value, we keep it entirely domestic. We collect plastic from companies like Krónan, Húsasmiðjan, Eimskip, Vínbúðin, Myllan, BM Vallá, Samskip, and many more! There is absolutely no need to export or import waste.
  • Locally made fluid: The windshield washer fluid inside is produced by CrossChem, a company based in Hafnarfjörður that uses Icelandic water to make the liquid.

Closing the loop

We love closing the loop! We collect plastic waste from local companies, recycle it, and sell the finished product right back to the very same store the waste originated from.

Why is this canister so unique?

  • The anatomy of the canister: The inner layer is made from soft plastic (such as hay bale wrap and plastic packaging), which makes up about 70% of the canister. The outer layers are made of hard plastic waste (specifically HDPE) sourced just 14 km away from our factory.
  • "Lazy-Friendly" Recycling: The label is made from the exact same plastic as the canister itself. When you’re done, there’s no need to peel the label off, just toss the entire canister straight into the recycling bin, and we will melt it all down together to make a new one!

Every ton of plastic recycled by Pure North saves 0.7 tons of CO2​eq and 1.8 tons of oil compared to producing a new ton of virgin plastic.
